Sloppy Joe Tacos, aka Sloppy Jose Tacos - Happy National Taco Day!

Sloppy Joe Tacos, a.k.a. Sloppy Jose Tacos

Today is National Taco Day - and we at Everyday Southwest are celebrating by combining one of America's favorite classic comfort foods - Sloppy Joes - with perhaps the most beloved Mexican dish of all time - The Taco. Did you know that in 2012 Americans ate 4.5 BILLION tacos? Holy Guacamole!

One of my favorite food memories is an old school taco - made Sonora style. I grew up in Tucson, Arizona, eating bean burros and tacos -  not so much PB&Js like many American kids. (WARNING - UPCOMING RANT: They are called BURROS, people. A burrito is a small burro. Never, ever use the term "Grande Burrito," because that translates as "small large burro." RANT CONCLUDED.)

Back to finish my thought: Old School tacos, Sonora style, are made by placing seasoned raw ground beef in a corn tortilla and then frying the whole thing together. Odd, you may say. True that, but so yummy and comforting. Just like Sloppy Joe Tacos. Old School wins again!

Serves: 4 to 6
Ingredients
  • 1 Tb olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 3 jalapenos, diced
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 can (15 ounces) diced tomatoes with green chiles
  • 1 Tb Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tb chile powder
  • 1 Tb galric powder
  • 1 Tb soy sauce
  • 1 Tb ground cumin
  • 1 Tb smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
Instructions
  1. Cook jalapenos and onion in a large skillet over medium high heat in oil until softened, about 3 minutes, stirring constantly. Add in ground beef and cook until browned, breaking into small bits.
  2. Add remaining ingredients and reduce to a simmer. Cook until most of liquid has evaporated.
  3. Serve on corn tortillas and top with garnishes as desired. I used cilantro, diced radishes and queso fresco.

I'd take burros over PB&J any day!
