Ingredients for Shrimp Tostadas & Substitutions
These are the main ingredients for Shrimp Tostadas and some ideas for possible substitutions. Do check the recipe card for additional notes and suggestions.
- Shrimp: To make this recipe as quick and simple as possible, use shell-off, tail-off, and uncooked shrimp. I used large shrimp. (if I'm in a big hurry, I have been known to use precooked shrimp. Sh... It's our little secret)
- Tomato: I used 2 medium Roma tomatoes, you can use one regular large tomato instead.
- Red Onion: You could use white onion instead if desired.
- Serrano or Jalapeńo Chile: For a milder taste, use jalapeños instead.
- Lime Juice: In a pinch you can use lemon for a slightly different flavor. I would just avoid that squeeze bottle with the citrus juice.
- Cilantro: You could omit it and just serve the tostadas with extra cilantro on the side for people to add their own.
- Salt: Regular or fine kosher salt is fine to use, adjust to your taste.
- Tostadas: What is a tostado? It's a corn tortilla that has been baked or fried until crispy. You can bake or fry it yours self or This is what most Mexican recipes serve this dish on. This is a link to my favorite pre-made tostada shells. You can find them on Amazon, at Fry's or Kroger. You can also find them at your local Latin food market or most supermarkets.
Tips for These Ingredients
**For the shrimp you could use fresh shrimp with the peels on but, to save time, leave it to the professionals. If your grocery store sells fresh seafood, chances are they will clean the fresh shrimp for you. Just ask them.
How to Serve Shrimp Tostadas
My favorite way, and my family's, to serve these shrimp tostadas is with a nice layer of mashed avocado or guacamole.
To make it, you simply use a fork to mash the avocado until creamy, sprinkle in a pinch of salt and a drizzle of lime juice. Sprinkle a little pinch garlic salt, if you'd like. Mix until well combined, taste and adjust lime or salt as desired. (You could also just toss everything into the food processor until creamy.)
Then, you grab a crunchy tostada and smear a good amount of the avocado mash over it. Next, pile on the shrimp mixture.
You can serve your tostadas with extra slices of avocado, extra lime wedges, and maybe a drizzle of sour cream or hot sauce, or your favorite homemade salsa.
What If I Don't Have Tostada Shells?
In a pinch, when you don't have tostadas (or you want to serve these tostadas more like a ceviche de camaron) then, you could serve inside a bowl on a serving platter surrounded with tortilla chips or saltine crackers.
How to Store Leftovers
**Leftovers are best stored in the refrigerator and in an airtight container and consumed within 24 hours. The tomatoes start going mushy and their taste goes off quickly. This dish is best made and consumed the same day you prepare it.
**The avocado will go brown rather quickly. Do not mash the avocado until you are ready to serve the shrimp tostadas. You can prep this recipe a day ahead of time, don't prep the avocado. Just wait to prep it and hour or less before you serve it.

Shrimp Tostadas Recipe or Tostadas de Camarón
Ingredients
- 1 lb. shrimp, deveined and shell-off*
- 2 medium roma tomato, chopped
- ½ cup red onion, chopped
- 1 cup chopped cilantro, or to taste
- 1 to 2 serrano pepper, seeded and chopped (or use jalapeno for milder taste)
- 2 limes, juiced, or to taste
- 1 teaspoon salt, adjust to taste
- 2 medium avocados
- Pinch of salt
- Squeeze of lime
- 8 tostada shells
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the chopped onion, Serrano chile, lime juice, tomato, and cilantro. Sprinkle in the teaspoon of salt and mix until well combined. Refrigerate for 15 minutes or until ready to use.
- In a medium size pot over medium-high heat, bring the water to a boil. Add a large pinch of salt. When the water boils, carefully add the raw shrimp. Stir to distribute the shrimp evenly.
- Cook the shrimp for about 2 to 3 minutes or until the shrimp changes color.
- Drain the shrimp and allow them to cool until you can handle them. Or use a strainer to remove the shrimp so that you can use the boiling water for another batch of shrimp. TIP: Transfer the hot shrimp to an ice bath or cold water to stop the cooking quickly.
- Roughly chop the shrimp into bite-size pieces. Then mix into the refrigerated vegetables. Refrigerate for at least 10 minutes or until ready to serve.
- Right before serving, make the avocado mash. Peel the avocado, remove the seed and place inside a bowl. Sprinkle it with a little bit of salt and a squeeze of lime juice. Use a fork to mash until you have a smooth creamy texture.
- Grab a tostada shell and smear a good amount of the avocado mash onto it. Then scoop some shrimp mixture onto the tostada. Serve right away.
Notes
* I used frozen shrimp that I defrosted in the refrigerator over night.
** Tip: chop the shrimp into pieces so that they are easier to eat on top of the tostada. When the shrimp are whole, they fall off the tostada shell and make eating them a little tricky. Additionally, chopping the shrimp will help it go a longer way and spread them out evenly over the tostada.
*** You can easily double the recipe for larger servings, if desired.
